2009 Favia Rompecabezas, Red Wine, Amador
Our fifth vintage of Rompecabezas continues to excite us! Spanish for "jig-saw puzzle," this blend is inspired by the wines of the Southern Rhone, but of course is decidedly Californian in nature. Now in their fifth year of production, the vines have graduated to a new level of maturity, the stepping stones to increasingly complex wines. Working closely with our dedicated vineyard manager Ann Kraemer, we have achieved better phenolic ripening, leading to more color expression in the Grenache and Mourvedre. Whole cluster, rich, dense Grenache, with immediate notes of garrigue and dried cherries, is co-fermented with fresh, vibrant Mourvedre in stainless steel. A small portion of Grenache was made in mini open-top new French oak fermenters. After a long, controlled maceration, the wine is blended with Syrah and aged in a combination of neutral French oak and 600-liter concrete eggs for two years.
Highly aromatic, notes of cardamom, beeswax and logan berries emanate from the glass. On the palate, one is happily met with black cherries, red licorice and cocoa nibs, followed by rugged mouth-coating tannins, with lingering hints of white-petaled flowers. The 2009 blend is composed of 43% Grenache, 37% Mourvedre and 20% Syrah.
