2009 Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard |
Wine Advocate #198 Dec 2011 Antonio Galloni 95 Drink: 2012 - 2021
The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard is a much more opulent wine that in many ways is less typical of Howell Mountain. It is an especially seamless Cabernet Sauvignon loaded with dark fruit, flowers and mint, all of which are supported by insistent veins of minerality. All of the flavors build effortlessly to the muscular, inviting finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021.
This is a gorgeous set of wines from Frank and Kathy Dotzler. The Outpost wines have very distinct personalities, and stand quite apart from most of what is being made in Napa Valley today, especially when it comes to Grenache, Zinfandel and Petite Syrah. The estate is located on Howell Mountain, in a very distinct microclimate that features a condensed growing season. When I visited in April this year the vines were completely dormant, yet when I returned, in late October, early morning temperatures were easily ten degrees warmer than they were on the valley floor.
Wine Advocate #192 Dec 2010 Robert Parker (94-96) Drink: N/A
The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard reveals lots of florality, red and black fruits and full body. The regular Cabernet Sauvignon is slightly less dense, but more juicy and forward than the Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard, which exhibits more body, depth, power and richness. The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard has a chance to equal its 2008 counterpart. It, too, should be drunk during its first 15 years of life.

Proprietors Kathy and Frank Dotzler along with winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown have quickly pushed this estate high on Howell Mountain to one of the leaders of that appellation. These wines all possess considerable character and the 2008s have certainly lived up to my forecast from last year, especially the Cabernets, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel.
Rated: 93-95 by Stephen Tanzer, May/June '11 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Good ruby-red. Complex, musky aromas of plum, redcurrant, smoked meat, mint, chocolate, dried flowers and wild herbs; conveys a strong rocky quality. Then rich, fat, sweet and seamless, with the impression of wildness carrying through on the palate. The big, building tannins reach the incisors, but here they are suaver and finer-grained than those of the basic Outpost cabernet. Finishes very long, with a savory minerality and a lovely light touch. Offers terrific potential.
