The 2010 Syrah Coastview Vineyard is gorgeous. Harvested all on November 6, with a brix at 23.5 and a pH of 3.5, it's a remarkable effort that boasts incredible focus and purity in its pure blackberry, spring flowers, ground herbs, mineral and hints of game-like bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, with a silky, lightly textured style, it has fabulous length, integrated acidity and a focused finish. It should be at its best from 2016-2026.
Big Basin's Bradley Brown continues to fashion some incredible wines from a number of vineyards in the Central Coast. All of these new releases are noteworthy and have elegant, refined and pure characters without losing a beat with regard to fruit or texture. They're highly recommended.
ワインメーカー・ノート
The Gabilan Mountains are a sizable range of rugged granitic and calcareous mountains that run down the East side of the Salinas Valley, in Monterey County. Located six miles south of Calera's Mount Harlan AVA, the Coastview Vineyard is perched at 2,400 ft looking over the Salinas Valley, Santa Lucia Highlands and Monterey Bay. The owner, John Allen, is committed to farming organically and sustainably. Sheep graze the grasses of the vineyard, as Great Pyrenees guard them from Mountain Lions which regularly roam this remote location. We work closely with John so that the vines receive exactly the care and attention that we desire to authentically capture this truly world class vineyard site.
2010 was a cool and mild growing season. Early bud break was followed by a cool Spring and mild summer that delayed veraison to one of the latest dates we have seen. An end of Summer heat spike helped ripen the fruit, though some fruit that was exposed to the sun was damaged and required a pass through the vineyard to eliminate much of it with the remainder eliminated on the sorting table at the winery. Even with this late season heat, we still did not harvest the Coastview Syrah until November 6 - our latest harvest in this vineyard to date and at the lowest sugars yet (23.5 brix). The very long growing season allowed the grapes to achieve wonderful physiological ripeness, yet with lower resulting alcohol in the finished wine. There is a finesse and intensity with the 2010 Coastview Syrah that is pleasing to both new and old world palates.
We selected nine of the best barrels (out of 17) and allowed them to age for a full 27 months before bottling the wine unfined and unfiltered in January of 2013.
The wine has a complex, energetic and perfumed nose of violets, mulberries, wild black raspberries, hints of roasted meats, and crushed rocks. Racy and vibrant on the palate with fine tannins and long unfolding and persistent finish that allows one to contemplate the cornucopia of mixed berry notes. The 2010 Coastview Syrah will be enjoyable upon release with decanting and has the intensity and structure to age for at least 10-15 years.
"Plums, black cherries, smoke, tobacco and tar are some of the many notes that inform the 2010 Syrah Coastview Vineyard. A juicy, pliant Syrah, the 2010 Coastview is showing beautifully today. There is plenty of early and medium-term appeal in this elegant and impeccably balanced Syrah." - Antonio Galloni, 93 Points
