Winemaker Notes
Following its traditional path, the Umino is generous and expressively fruity to the nose, with scents of Bing cherry, Black cherry, purple plum, crab apple syrup, candied orange peel, pink peppercorn, coriander seed and tobacconist shop-spice all making an appearance. It proves as plush and juicy in the mouth as expected, layering-on all the aforementioned fruits and spices, but it never feels weighty or overdone, as the focus holds and the zest brightens, while the intense flavor keeps the wines tannic underpinnings well in the background. The finish is long and flavor-packed, so everything is already amiable for current drinking, yet this wines very best showing is still to be a few more years down the road.
Vintage Notes
The cool wet spring of 2010 created naturally low yields, followed by an exceptionally cold summer, possibly the coldest in a century indicating a potentially late harvest. In August our obligatory heat spell came and went but this year it was followed by another three weeks later. Our late harvest was pushed up as fruit quickly ripened, placing it in the style of 2004, dark and concentrated for Pinot Noir. A strong weather system rolled through in late October quickening the pace of harvest but by then ripeness wasn’t an issue. Production was down across the board, but the 2010 vintage turned out to be very good for Pinot Noir and an exceptional one for Chardonnay.
