2010 Clos du Ciel presents the eye with a deep red ruby color. On the nose it has an intense aroma of black cherry, cassis, strawberry
liqueur, black raspberry with truffle, clove, graphite and leather notes. Rich, round and balanced, the wine is full bodied with accents
of fruit and spice. The texture of Clos du Ciel is sensual with an impressive length. It will require a couple years of cellaring to
develop its bouquet and remarkable potential. The wine will age gracefully for two decades.

Harvested: September 30, 2010 to October 1, 2010
100% naturally fermented using native yeasts
Aged 16 months in 33% new French oak barrels from select artisan coopers
Bottled unfined and unfiltered February 1, 2012
Alcohol 15.8 %; Release Date: September 1, 2012

"Dark ruby.  Heady aromas of raspberry and Asian spices are complemented by deeper notes of cherry-cola and licorice.  Zesty, finely etched red berry flavors stain the palate, with juicy acidity and a suave floral element providing lift.  The sweet red fruit flavors expand on the extremely long finish, picking up notes of candied rose and blood orange.  This spicy, energetic, very pure pinot has the balance and depth to age." "The 2010 Pinot Noir Clos Du Ciel PMW Estate is the most complete of these 2010 Pinots. A striking, expressive bouquet melds into layers of fruit as this huge, powerful wine opens up in the glass. The Clos du Ciel seems to combine the aromatic depth of the Caprice with the fruit of the Danseuse, a marriage that works beautifully. Sweet floral and spice notes add lift on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020.

I tasted a large number of wines at Peter Michael. Overall, the 2009 reds made the most positive impression on this visit. The 2009 Chardonnays are very strong. I am less enamored with the 2010 Chardonnays, as they clearly show the ill-effects of a challenging growing season, which at Peter Michael yielded very concentrated whites with slightly higher than normal alcohol levels and an element of heaviness that is out of character. Winemaker Nick Morlet describes 2010 as a difficult year. Bud break was a full month late. High winds and rain during the flowering resulted in high amounts of shatter and yields that are dramatically lower than normal. Morlet describes 2009 as a vintage where everything ripened quickly and at the same time. This lineup includes several wines that are being released for the first time, including a trio of Pinot Noirs from estate-owned coastal vineyards planted in 2006 and 2007. It will be fascinating to see how those wines develop as the vines acquire age. The newest wine in the ever-expanding Peter Michael stable is a new Cabernet Sauvignon from the former Showket vineyard that will make its debut with the 2011 vintage and that will be called Le Chevalier. I hope to taste it soon. I tasted the 2010 Chardonnays and Pinots from barrel. Those wines were scheduled to be bottled in February 2012. The 2009 Chardonnays and Pinots were bottled in late January/early February 2011." (Wine Advocate #199 Feb 2012 Antonio Galloni Drink: 2014 - 2020)
