As proud as I am of what we accomplished in 2011, one of the few disappointments that year was not being able to produce a Petite Sirah. Between the cool nature of the growing season (Pet likes heat) and the ill-timed rain (Pet seems to rot even at the mere mention of a cloud!), our Palisades Petite Sirah went unpicked. Fortunately, there were no such issues in 2012. Picked September 29th at 26.0 Brix, the wine spent nearly 30 days on the skins to help soften the tannins. (Like Nebbiolo, Petite Sirah is actually low in tannin but the tannins present are highly extractable.) Pressed to all French oak, only 18% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note: Totally black. Opaque. Any blacker and you’d have to worry about nearby objects being sucked in and lost forever. A powerful, concentrated nose of delicious blueberry and blackberry goodness. On the palate, full-bodied with the typical Pet tannins nearly overwhelmed by the abundant fruit. Very consistent with previous releases. When to drink? We prefer our Pets on the young side but there’s no doubt this wine can go 20 years or more. Just depends on whether you like your Pets very primary and fruit forward or more mellow with secondary characteristics. (MRO – 01/18/14)

"Napa Valley, the 2012 Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard boasts off-the-charts richness along with classic notes of blackberries, blueberries, camphor and spring flowers. The colossal concentration, massive extract, surprisingly sweet tannin and high alcohol (15.4%) suggest it should age effortlessly for 20+ years. Unfortunately, just over 100 cases were made.
Carlisle Winery’s Mike Officer and his wife are one of the wonderful stories in the wine world. Going from a part-time home winemaker, to turning out some of his beloved Zinfandels, to becoming one of the two or three leading guardians of old vine Zinfandel in Northern California, Mike Officer was so good at making wine that he changed careers and wine consumers are the beneficiaries. The single vineyard Zins are absolutely remarkable. Everyone who loves Zinfandel should be on Carlisle’s mailing list, the wines are primarily available only from the winery. Sadly, Mike Officer is not making as much Syrah as he used to given the difficult marketplace for this varietal. That’s a shame, as great Syrahs are truly magnificent wines."
(made from fruit picked at 26 degrees Brix; 15.4% alcohol): Glass-staining purple. Explosive dark berry liqueur, violet and licorice scents are accented by a spicy nuance and a hint of black pepper. Full-bodied and supple in texture, with unlikely vivacity to its deep blackcurrant and blueberry flavors. Really stains the palate and finishes sweet, gently tanni
