2012 Rivers-Marie Panek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena -250 cases, 14.4% alcohol, 70% new oak
The texture is what I like most about this wine. 2012 marks the first vintage where I've gotten an incredibly broad, layered mid-palate out of Panek so early. Like the other offerings, it's a bit more serious then in years past. Shooting for the 250 case mark, we had plenty of raw material to work with so we were able to thoughtfully take our time in putting this together. We laid out every barrel and tasted through multiple times looking for only the best and most complimentary. It's the most complete showing for a Panek upon release with a fullness from front to back that highlights the greatness of the vintage.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard (14.4% alcohol) was aged in 70% new oak. Made from four Cabernet clones (Clones 169, 7, 4 and 6), it comes from a vineyard on the valley floor at the end of the Aida Vineyard that Vineyard 29 has made famous. Copious notes of earth, charcoal embers, wet gravel, garrigue, blackberry and blackcurrants are accompanied by a long, deep wine with sweet tannins, a fabulous mouthfeel, an opulent, velvety texture, and tremendous length as well as richness. Drink it over the next two decades.
Rivers-Marie takes its name from Thomas Rivers Brown, the famous wine consultant, and Genevieve Marie Welsh, who started this operation in 2002. These are the first wines I have tasted from this estate. They also produce some Pinot Noirs from Sonoma which I will taste later this year. All these cuvées reflect brilliant winemaking and viticultural work.
