2013 Vintage - Pinot Noir - Sonoma Coast
--------------------------------------------------
Our 2013 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is a blend of eight vineyards: Gap’s Crown, Griffin’s Lair, Kanzler, Pfendler, Spring Hill, Terra de Promissio, Thorn Ridge and Walala. Most of these are located in the southern portion of the Sonoma Coast appellation and lie directly in the path of the Petaluma Wind Gap’s Pacific Ocean cooling and the maritime influence of the San Pablo Bay. The outlier, Walala Vineyard, is located in the northwestern coastal reaches near Annapolis. The wines from the Petaluma Gap region are rich, voluptuous and structured with dark black and blue fruit, deep texture and broad structure. The wines from Walala are red fruit driven with clean earth, a slight spice, elegant structure and a complex core.
Aromatics:
The wine shows focused black cherry, ripe currants, and blueberry in the nose, followed by intense blackberry. In the background there is a dusting of cocoa nibs and cassis.
On the palate:
The 2013 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir first shows dark fruits that focus on the center of the palate then steadily permeates into all areas of the mouth. The focused acidity, balanced with gripping tannins, carries the rich dark fruit character toward the mid-palate, followed by lush black cherry and sealed with ripe currants. Flavors are slowly released from the wine showing a rich complexity of flavors, textures, ending with a long seductive finish.

Harvest from September 10th to October 10th, the 2013 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is a sexy, supple and textured effort that has lots of jammy dark fruits, licorice and toasted spice. Surprisingly textured and rounded, it has terrific purity and a hard-to-resist personality. I don't see any reason to delay gratification and would drink bottles over the coming 4-5 years.
Based out of Sebastopol, Kosta Browne’s Dan Kosta, Michael Browne and Chris Costello continue to fashion a bevy of brilliant Pinot Noirs from a number of sites spread throughout California. The big news at this estate, however, was the purchasing of a controlling interest by J.W. Childs Associates out of Boston. Concerning the impact of this change to the wine, the winemaking remains untouched and nothing I heard during my visit gave me pause concerning the quality of this estate going forward. In addition, Browne and John Childs (the CEO of J.W. Childs Associates) have previously worked together in the past with their Cirq label (which I wasn’t able to taste for this report), so I think Kosta Browne lovers can rest easy. Going forward, this team is increasingly looking to own and farm their vineyards, so expect quality to hold steady or even increase. Looking at their 2013s, this was obviously a great vintage for this estate and all of the wines showed sensational purity and freshness paired with layered, nicely concentrated and textured profiles. I’d say it’s the finest lineup I’ve tasted from this estate.
