This is the most exciting new source
for Rivers-Marie in a long time. Marc
and Carolyn Lore's 2-acre vineyard
sits in arguably the most prestigious
Cabernet neighborhood in Napa Valley.
We are fortunate to now be leasing
this site for Rivers-Marie, which not
only gains us access to such a great
spot but also allows us to completely
control the farming. This is such a
substantial wine it's almost more
about texture than flavor. It's super
broad and deep and covers and
saturates the palate in a very
complete way. There's a crystalline
minerality to the wine that gives it
further density but also gives it
defined dimension and focus. As
Antonio Galloni noted in Vinous Media,
he believes this is one of the best
Cabernets I've ever made all clients
included. We'd be happy to put this up
against anything coming out of Napa in
the 2013 vintage.

”Another killer effort from Rivers-Marie is the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Lore Vineyard, from a steep and rocky single vineyard in the Vaca foothills of eastern Napa above the Rudd Winery. The wine comes across with fabulous intensity and loads of blackberry, blueberry and cassis fruit, licorice, camphor and incense. This is great stuff, backward, as all of these 2013s tend to be. It’s the smallest of these cuvées, with about 250 cases, or ten barrels produced. This wine is another one to benefit from 4-6 years of cellaring and should keep for three decades or more.
This is the home project of Thomas Rivers Brown and Genevieve Marie Welsh, who started this boutique operation in 2002. In the last few years, they’ve expanded to include Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. I tasted four Pinot Noirs from Rivers-Marie, all of them different and singular. I also had a look at two vintages of the four Cabernet Sauvignons that are made by Rivers-Marie. The 2013s are in bottle and are absolutely spectacular wines. The 2014s look strong, with up-front fruit, but exceptional density, purity and richness.”
