Better informed farming continues to elevate not just the blocks in this bottling but also all the blocks we harvest at Panek. It makes our blending decisions more difficult each year but that extra work is certainly worth the extra quality in a wine like this 2016. The vineyard does best in muscular years so this version reminds me more of the 2013 as opposed to the 2014 or 2015. There’s more apparent fruit than in the 2013 to stand up to the structure of the vintage. This wine has calmed considerably during its last 6 or so months in barrel. It was a bit brooding for the first year of its life (odd for Panek) but that character only hinted at the concentration contained within. Now that it has unwound a bit, the trademark brown sugar note has emerged but here joined by a blackberry/cassis note. Loamy black soil, dried herbs and sweet tobacco complete the experience by adding a strong sense of varietal character to the mix, another hallmark of the vintage. This is a structured Panek for sure but with all other great 2016s, there is a sense of balance across all components of the wine that provides good early drinkability.

Very deep purple-black in color, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard (a barrel sample) is fragrantly scented of Indian spices, roses and dried herbs over a core of mulberries, warm blackberries and cassis plus a waft of black soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is taut and muscular, strutting seriously spicy characters among the tightly packed black fruit notions, finishing with great length.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard will certainly be a match for the 2014 and 2015. Cassis, tobacco leaf, spring flowers, and graphite notes all give way to a ripe, layered 2016 that has a wonderful sweetness to its fruit as well as sensational purity. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 80% new French oak, it should drink nicely in its youth yet cruise in the cellar. Winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown has hit a home run with latest releases from his Rivers Marie label, which is a collaboration with Genevieve Marie Welsh started in 2002. These are big, rich, concentrated wines, yet like everything Brown is involved with, the wines are pure, perfectly balanced, and have a seamless texture that can be hard to describe. And as Napa Valley wines goes, these remain reasonably priced and should be snatched up by readers. (12/2017)
