Also elegant and finesse-styled, the 2011 GSM Paderewski Vineyard is a blend of close to equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre that comes from Epoch’s Paderewski Vineyard on the west side of Paso Robles. Aged primarily in larger format, neutral barrels, it offers up a sweet bouquet of black raspberry, spring flowers, resin and licorice to go with a medium-bodied, streamlined and silky mouthfeel. Lagging the spectacular 2010, it’s nevertheless an outstanding bottle of wine that delivers solid richness and depth while staying classy and light. Give it another year or two and enjoy through 2020. Decant if drinking anytime soon. Drink 2015-2020.

ワインメーカー・ノート
The Paderewski Vineyard (named for the famous pianist who owned the land) is located in the hills above the west-side of Paso Robles. Justin Smith of Saxum was hired to plan out this vineyard which is planted exclusively on hillsides of blinding white calcareous shale. The vines struggle in these high lime content soils and produce a wine that is vibrant, intense and complex.
The 2011 is our second vintage working with this vineyard. We picked on October 28 and co-fermented the three varietals in two separate fermentation lots. The majority of the wine was aged 19 months in 300 liter hogs heads made with medium toast French oak known to integrate thoroughly and maintain transparency and pure fruit expression. The co-fermentation resulted in a seamless integration of the different varietals. The final blend is 29% Grenache, 36% Syrah and 35% Mourvedre.
The wine possesses an alluring nose of violets, crushed flowers, mulberries, crushed rocks and a hint of mocha. On the palate, it is mouthcoating with silky tannins, a cornucopia of berries, crushed rocks and floral notes. Nice length gives way to an extended finish that sticks long to the mid-palate. Compared with the 2010 vintage, the 2011 is more elegant with lower alcohol and will certainly reward extended aging to a greater degree. It is a wine that is not about size and weight but refinement and sexiness. Give this wine some air and it will evolve steadily revealing additional layers of complexity. It is strongly recommended that this wine be cellared for at least one to two years from release, and it should continue to reward aging for another five to tens years.

About the Artist: Matt Jones rose to the challenge of capturing the essence of Grenache in this painting of our estate vines. He employed an entirely new technique consisting of plastering a plywood sheet, then applying the paints over the top. The result is definitely a modern twist on impressionistic painting and captures the vibrant qualities of this varietal. – Bradley Brown, Proprietor & Winemaker
