2011 Big Basin Pinot Noir Alfaro Family Vineyard |
ワインメーカー・ノート
To say 2011 was a challenging vintage in the Santa Cruz Mountains is an understatement. Summer never came and a winter storm slammed the mountains the first weekend of June, destroying a majority of the flowers which should have ultimately become Pinot Noir grapes. The blocks where we typically harvest 2 tons an acre only produced an 1/8th of a ton per acre. The few grapes we did receive were of good quality and produced a very distinct and compelling finished wine.
Our 2011 Alfaro Pinot is lighter in color, yet has the structure and abundant tannin required for aging. It is tightly wound in its youth with the dominant expression being one of minerality - wet stone with hints of rose petals, mulberries, bergamont, cranberries and a cedar resin note. On the palate, this wine has mesmerizing texture, red currant berries, raspberries, cranberries with a backbone of refreshing acidity that propels a building and lingering finish. This is a wine that demands at least a year and a half in bottle to integrate and unwind the fruit, and should age gracefully for at least another five to ten years.
About the Artist: Friend and Santa Cruz artist Matt Jones is developing a strong following in Northern California where his colorful and energy-inspired (sometimes by live music) paintings demand attention and contemplation. – Bradley Brown, Winemaker
