To say 2011 was a challenging vintage is an understatement. Summer never came and a winter storm slammed the mountains the first weekend of June, destroying a majority of the flowers which should have ultimately become grapes. Temperatures remained cool the remainder of the growing season and wet weather returned in October. We harvested the majority of this Pinot Noir in mid-October. The resulting wine reminds us that challenging vintages bring out the best in farmers and winemakers.
The Lester Family Vineyard is located on Pleasant Valley Road in Corralitos and is overseen by the most notable Vineyard Manager in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Prudy Foxx who has been looking after vineyards in Corralitos for almost 30 years. The vineyard is located at 539 ft elevation and was planted in 1998 and 2001. We selected three clones from three different blocks each of which we harvested at ideal ripeness - clone 37 (Mt. Eden), 667, 115 and a small amount of 777. As is typical for the site, there were very small clusters and berries. We used about 30% whole cluster with the remainder destemmed whole berry. We produced seven barrels, a few of which were new and aged them for 16 months.
The cool 2011 vintage has produced wines with stunning aromatics. The perfumed nose radiates dark berries, mushrooms and whole cluster fermentation. The palate carries the same qualities of the nose and lingers with a penetrating long finish of distinctive Santa Cruz Mountain spiciness.
About the Artist: Friend and Santa Cruz artist Matt Jones is developing a strong following in Northern California where his colorful and energy-inspired (sometimes by live music) paintings demand attention and contemplation. – Bradley Brown, Winemaker

A beautifully expressive, perfumed and complex effort, the 2011 Pinot Noir Lester Family Vineyard offers up notions of dried cherries and plum-like fruit, dried spices, violets and licorice. More peppery nuances develop with time in the glass, and it's light and graceful on the palate, with notable richness and length paired with integrated acidity. This beauty comes all from the Lester Family Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains, was fermented with 15% whole clusters and spent 16 months in 57% new French oak barrels. Already delicious, enjoy it over the coming 3-5 years.
Big Basin's Bradley Brown continues to fashion some incredible wines from a number of vineyards in the Central Coast. All of these new releases are noteworthy and have elegant, refined and pure characters without losing a beat with regard to fruit or texture. They're highly recommended.
