We didn’t think it possible to top our 2011 Sonoma County Zinfandel for value and quality but top it we did! How? First we blended Zinfandel from Rossi Ranch (planted 1910), Banfield Ranch (formerly known as Martinelli Road Vineyard, planted 1881), and Rowe Vineyard (planted 1906, just outside the northern boundary of Sonoma Valley). To add color and mid-palate volume, we added some young-vine Petite Sirah from Rossi Ranch and some old-vine Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, and Petit Bouschet from the Saitone Ranch (planted 1895). At this point, most wineries would have been thrilled with the result but we wanted more. Hence, we sacrificed four barrels of Montafi Ranch Zinfandel and two barrels of Sodini Vineyard Zinfandel to add texture and length to the wine. Mission accomplished! A spectacular unfined/unfiltered old-vine Zinfandel at a bargain of a price.
Tasting Note: Medium-dark purple-ruby. Aromas of raspberry, cherry, orange rind, and spice. Full-bodied with flavors of boysenberry, black cherry, and a touch of loamy earth. Very harmonious on the palate with a caressing mouthfeel and subtle tannins on the finish. Mind blowing quality for price. Most wineries would charge double to triple what we are for a wine like this. Drink from release through 2021. (MRO – 01/18/14)

Dark and jammy, with black raspberry and fruitcake aromas and luscious flavors of blackberry, licorice and smoky cracked pepper. Drink now through 2020. 986 cases made. –TF
The least expensive offering is the gorgeous 2012 Zinfandel Sonoma, which comes from many different sources, but all are old vine Zinfandel and the so-called Mixed Black vineyards that were planted by Italian immigrants, usually in the late 1800s and early 1900s (prior to Prohibition). This is a 1,000-case cuvee whose vines were planted between 1881 and 1926. A dense ruby color is followed by copious aromas of brambleberries, black cherries, spice box and pepper. This pure, full-bodied (14.8% alcohol) Zinfandel hits the palate with loads of hedonistic joy. Consume this beautiful Zinfandel during its first 3-4 years of life.
Carlisle Winery’s Mike Officer and his wife are one of the wonderful stories in the wine world. Going from a part-time home winemaker, to turning out some of his beloved Zinfandels, to becoming one of the two or three leading guardians of old vine Zinfandel in Northern California, Mike Officer was so good at making wine that he changed careers and wine consumers are the beneficiaries. The single vineyard Zins are absolutely remarkable. Everyone who loves Zinfandel should be on Carlisle’s mailing list, the wines are primarily available only from the winery. Sadly, Mike Officer is not making as much Syrah as he used to given the difficult marketplace for this varietal. That’s a shame, as great Syrahs are truly magnificent wines.
