ワインメーカー・ノート
Tucked behind a knoll in a small glen along Browns Valley Road in Corralitos resides the historic Woodruff Family Vineyard, the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the area. Four-acres of of Pinot Noir were planted during the 1970's before modern 'Dijon Clones'; the gnarled dry-farmed vines of this vineyard produce a truly exotic expression of Pinot Noir unlike any we've experienced anywhere in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The challenging 2011 vintage with late spring rains destroyed the vines' flowers which resulted in extremely low yields. This may have been a blessing in disguise as we still were barely able to get these grapes ripe by the very end of October. In the end, we bottled only 22 cases (only one barrel!) of this treasured cuvée.
The hallmark of the 2011 vintage across all of our wines are the vibrant, perfumed aromatics. The Woodruff delivers a lifted bouquet of exotic asian spices, blood orange, cedar box and foraged mushrooms. The palate at this time is lively with acidity which delivers a long, intense finish, and the refined soft tannins which only older vines can impart are simply delightful. The true potential of this wine will not be realized for many, many years to come when the already balanced components of this wine fully harmonize to reveal the euphoric velvety texture Pinot Noir is renowned for. Please be patient and cellar this wine for 5+ years, or ideally longer.

"The 2011 Woodruff Family Vineyard Pinot Noir is beautifully lifted and savory in the glass. Crushed flowers, savory herbs, wild flowers and dried cherries meld together in a soft, floral Pinot. Ideally the 2011 needs to be opened at least a few hours in advance to allow all of the elements, especially the whole clusters, to come together."
