2012 was a God-send of a vintage, coming off the heels of the challenging 2010 and 2011 vintages. Considered a classic vintage because we experienced the seasons as we should: rain and cool temperatures in winter, slowly warming into a rather dry Spring, an appropriately warm Summer slowly graduated into a cool Fall with almost no rain. The historic agricultural town of Corralitos a few miles from Monterey Bay, with a southern exposure is perfectly suited to grow some of the most compelling Pinot Noir in California. And 2012 presented slam dunk conditions for wines of unparalleled quality.
The Lester Family Vineyard is located on Pleasant Valley Road and is run by one of areas most most respected winegrowers, Prudy Foxx. Prudy has over 30 years experience tending Pinot Noir vines in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The vineyard is located at 539 ft elevation and was 14 years old in 2012. We work with three selections of Pinot Noir - clone 37 (Mt. Eden), 667, 115 - from three different blocks. As is typical for the site, the Pinot Noir clusters are very small and have small berries. The resulting wine from this truly unique site are unlike any of our other Single Vineyard Pinot Noirs, even from vineyards located only 1-3 miles away.
Our winemaking approach with Pinot Noir has been evolving each vintage by increasing use of whole clusters. The near perfect growing conditions of 2012 presented perfectly ripened stems which we included during fermentation to enhance the aromatics, structure and aging potential of the wine. It's a risky venture if the stems are too green, or the fruit isn't very clean, but when done appropriately with perfect stems and fruit, the benefits far outweigh the risks! Our 2012 Lester Pinot Noir was fermented with 42% whole clusters.
The aromatics of our Lester Vineyard Pinot Noir are striking. Lifted and perfumed, a Burgundy glass is highly recommended to capture the crushed flowers, Asian spice and savory notes which seem almost endless. The palate is treated to a melange of red fruits, earthiness, hints of fennel and pronounced spice unique to the Santa Cruz Mountains. The energy and verve of the vineyard were perfectly captured in this Pinot Noir which lacks no intensity at a mere 13.5% alcohol. The overall balance will allow this wine to age gracefully for many, many years. While delicious now, starting in 2022 an investment in this offering will begin to pay big dividends.
Pair this Pinot Noir with Shiitake Mushroom Risotto and you'll never forget that meal!

Bright, perfumed and slightly lifted aromatically, with plenty of plum, licorice, violets and menthol, the 2012 Pinot Noir Lester Family Vineyard is medium-bodied, supple and nicely textured, with good overall freshness. Showing more sweet fruit and floral notes with time in the glass, this pretty, perfumed and lively Pinot Noir should be consumed over the coming 5-8 years.
Located high up in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Big Basin Vineyards is run by Bradley Brown. He releases numerous estate wines, yet also makes a number of wines from other top vineyards in the Central Coast. These 2011s show the freshness and focus of the cooler vintage, and his 2012s offer beautiful purity, with more fruit forward profiles.
Vivid red. Smoky cherry and blackberry aromas are complemented by notes of licorice, black cardamom and illicit herbs (well, less illicit now than when I was growing up). Sweet dark fruit liqueur flavors are impressively deep and focused, with zesty acidity adding lift, focus and spine. Youthfully taut on the long spice- and mineral-tinged finish, which is shaped by fine-grained, building tannins.
