About Scarecrow
Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon is named after the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz because the man who originally owned the estate was the late J.J. Cohn, the legendary head of MGM, which is the studio that produced The Wizard of Oz. Located in Rutherford in Napa Valley, Scarecrow, which released its debut vintage in 2003, is quickly becoming one of Napa Valley’s most talked-about Cult Cabs. Only 400 cases of the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon are produced each year, no surprise given that the estate includes just 25 acres of vineyards. Located next door to the fabled Inglenook estate, Cohn bought the estate in 1942 and planted grapes in 1945 at the urging of Inglenook’s owner. For decades Cohn’s grapes were bought by some of Napa’s most admired producers, including Inglenook. In 1996 one of Cohn’s grandsons, Bret Lopez, was able to take over 25 acres of the estate. Today Lopez and his wife Mimi DeBlasio run Scarecrow with winemaker Celia Welch.
HARVEST NOTES
Vineyard Manager Michael Wolf:
The fall of 2020 was cold and fairly dry, with a series of small storms that fell short of the rainfall totals that we needed going into 2021.
JJ Cohn Estate is fortunate to have strong water resources which were vital in protecting the vines through some early season frost events.
It was evident from early on that the crop was going to be light, largely because of the vines’ response to the ongoing drought conditions.
Late spring and summer brought exceptionally good growing conditions, with both bloom and veraison a week or so ahead of historical averages.
The low yields, the result of a combination of fewer clusters and very small berries, dictated very little need for crop adjustments, and this combined with great growing conditions led to a relatively smooth and uneventful season, pointing to extremely high quality.
Harvest at JJC began on September 15th, and lasted through September 30th with the light crop throughout the valley helping to create a smooth season.
TASTING NOTES
Winemaker Celia Welch writes of the 2021 M.Étain:
The 2021 M. Étain presents complex floral, cherry, sage, lavender, tobacco, and blueberry aromas with plenty of oak and caramel underlying the fruit essence. At entry, the fresh, juicy, very bright fruit flavors dominate the palate impression. With lovely, consistent full texture and a very fresh cherry-raspberry pop at the finish of the palate, the dusty tannins are present, but play a complementary role on the palate as the fresh fruit flavors linger.
All fruit for this wine was harvested by hand from the JJ Cohn Estate in Rutherford, CA between September 15 and September 30, 2021. The fruit was put through an optical sorter, then fermented as small lots before gently pressing and transferring to barrels. The individual lots were aged in French Oak barrels for approximately 18 months prior to bottling in April 2023, without the use of fining or filtration. This final blend of estate fruit consists of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Malbec, 11% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot. 1071 cases of 750 ml bottles were produced in April 2023.
