2014 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Summa Vineyard

It’s nice to see quantity rebound for this wine in 2014. The other thing we’ve noticed is a dramatic uptick in quality for both Summa bottlings due to a renewed focus on farming. There are no holes in this wine as there might have been in years past. The Summa bottlings always came into equilibrium with time in bottle but at release we always found one or two things lacking in the wines. With this vintage, everything we’ve always liked about the site is magnified. The color is a more saturated red owing to the healthiness of the fruit in 2014. The nose and palate both have the classic Summa orange/red fruit profile with a touch of savory-ness perhaps due to the first ever inclusion of the interplant block. The interplants’ first crop was 2006 so it took us 9 vintages before we were comfortable including it in a Summa bottling. As nice as the palate is on this wine, I could just smell this all day.
