A few weeks ago after getting both kids to sleep, Genevieve comes down stairs, picks up the glass of wine I've poured her, takes a quick smell and says “this is Summa Old Vines.” That in a nutshell is what we try to achieve with this site. We've always been drawn to its distinctiveness and we don't ever to want to do anything to get in its way. Checking my notes from last year, the 2010 edition comes across very similarly: expansive nose, red fruits, orange peel, sweet hay, pine needles, black tea and red/white floral elements. Young, it's always a wine more about potential and breadth than depth. Picked October 20th just shy of 1 ton per acre, it possesses remarkable weight for a wine that struggled to hit 13% alcohol.

"Vinous / Antonio Galloni - "The 2010 Pinot Noir Summa Old Vines wraps around the palate with endless layers of dark red fruit, spices, licorice and leather. The 2010 boasts tons of depth and sheer richness, not to mention the muscle to age well in bottle for a number of years. I especially like the balance, inner perfume and texture on the finish. Incredibly, the fruit was harvested on October 20, very late by any standard. This is the first vintage that Rivers-Marie has owned Summa, but the site was purchased in September, so 2011 will be the first vintage the winery works the vineyard from the beginning of the year. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. Range: 93+ Points"

(from vines planted in 1977; no stems used here): Good medium red. Knockout nose offers raspberry, strawberry and smoke lifted by a rose petal topnote. Firmly built and serious, with terrific lift to its red berry and orange peel flavors. Wonderfully aromatic, long wine in an intense but very delicate style, finishing with palate-staining breadth. Three to five years of cellaring should bring more richness. These vines budded out on March 11 and were picked on October 20, according to winemaker Thomas Brown. Barely 12.5% alcohol but distinctly riper than the Summa bottling from vines planted in 1998."
